how the hell do you get them to screw up?

I've tryed everything from jacking the car on the arm an locking it in, nipping the head up an pressing pressure on an it just spins for fun! any ideas?

take ball joint out hole rub taper on ball joint and on lower arm with sandpaper, put together and push as far as you can with trolley jack, sanding should allow the taper to grip and let you tighten it back up

+1 except all I had to do was wipe the grease off the tapered surfaces with a tissue, this was anough to stop it spinning.

I use adjustable pliers opened right up with 2 sets of my old mountain bike handle bars to extend the handles of the plier for more leverage, jam one handle on the floor, push down on the other, whilst gripping the top of the ball joint.

works a treat and takes no time at all
